PSD Format Files - What is PSD Format - Details About PSD

PSD format files are the default file format of Adobe Photoshop for saving data. Files with a .psd extension at the end will be considered Photoshop Document (PSD) files. For working with graphics-related work you have to know about PSD files. So let's know more about PSD file format.

Every PSD file has a maximum height and width of 30,000 px, and a maximum length of 2GB. There are five main parts to the Photoshop file format. They are

1. File Header
2. Color Mode Data
3. Image Resources
4. Layer and Mask Information
5. Image Data

Now, Let's know more about these 5 part

The image's fundamental attributes are contained in the file header. Color mode data is available only for indexed color and duotone as defined by the mode field in the File Header section. This section is represented for all other modes by 4-byte zeroed values. For Indexed color images, the length is 768 and the color data contains the color table for the image, in non-interleaved order. For Duotone images, color data contains the duotone specification (the format of which is not documented). Other applications that read Photoshop files can treat a duotone image as a gray image, and just preserve the contents of the duotone information when reading and writing the file.
The non-pixel data connected with images, including pen tool trails, is stored in the image resources section. The Layer and Mask Information section of a Photoshop file contains information about the number of layers, channels in the layers, blending ranges, adjustment layer keys, effects layers, and mask parameters. The Image Data section contains the image's pixel information.
